BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — When the Central High School Hilltoppers of Bridgeport defeated the Wilbur Cross Governors 21-8 to open their football season on Sept. 13, it wasn’t an ordinary victory.

Led by head coach Brandan Miller, Central ended its 61-game losing streak. The skid began in 2017, and the Hilltoppers were just one defeat away from tying the Connecticut high school football record for most consecutive losses.

According to a release from Bridgeport Public Schools, the team spent the summer preparing for the game, putting in the work to avoid making Connecticut history.

To recognize the extraordinary win, the National Football League’s New York Giants have honored Miller as the Lou Rettino High School Coach of the Week.
