LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Kentucky Derby and Oaks-winning jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. is one step closer to recovery after undergoing successful surgery Monday to stabilize multiple broken ribs suffered in a spill at Churchill Downs.

Hernandez, 39, posted an update from UofL Hospital Monday evening on social media, writing:

“I had a successful surgery today to stabilize my ribs. I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers! The doctors and nurses here at U of L have been absolutely fantastic. Hopefully one step closer to going home.”
