JASPER, Texas — A convicted Jasper County felon who was mistakenly released from the Jefferson County Jail in June 2023 has been extradited from Colorado and returned to Texas custody, the Jasper County Sheriff's Office announced Monday.

Justin Keith DeBourgeois, 27, of Jasper, was taken into custody Sunday in Cañon City, Colorado, by Jasper County Sheriff's deputies with assistance from Texas Department of Public Safety aircraft personnel. DeBourgeois had been sentenced to 13 years in prison for a July 2021 aggravated robbery conviction but fled to Colorado to avoid transport to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

"If anyone commits crime in our county and then flees, we will use every available resource we have to bring them back here to face justice," Sheriff Chuck Havard said
