BEAUMONT, Texas — Horns are echoing once again through Beaumont’s West End, and city officials are now hoping to restore the quiet zones that once kept the noise at bay.

Quiet zones are areas where train engineers are not required to blow their horns under certain safety conditions. About a year ago, the trains began blowing again after the Railroad Commission deemed several railroad crossings unsafe.

Now, the city is working to reconfigure the crossings in order to bring peace back to West End residents.

“We had the quiet zone where they didn't blow their whistles, which was so great. And now since they could blow them again, sometimes some of the engineers like to really like tell me they're coming,” said Pat White, a Beaumont resident who has lived by the tracks for decades.
