Thousands of passengers faced disruption at Stansted Airport this morning (September 24) after a fire broke out in the Escape Lounge at 3.30am.
The immediate area was evacuated and no one was injured in the fire which was “quickly extinguished” by the Airport Fire Service, but the blaze did generate a "significant amount of smoke”, according to the airport.
Passengers were evacuated from the area to the terminal forecourt and were prevented from entering security, which was temporarily closed.
In an update shared at 6am, the airport announced that the lounge had reopened, but warned that security would take “longer than usual” and urged passengers to check the status of their flight.
