It may have become a bit of a local landmark, but the Canadian Coast Guard has come down hard on a vessel left abandoned on the shore in Port au Bras on the Burin Peninsula, declaring it a hazard to the marine environment and public safety.

The owner of the Exploits Harvester was fined just over $13,000 in June, and given 30 days to pay up or appeal.

The Coast Guard also ordered the owner to relocate and stabilize the vessel, and to ensure that all hazards associated with it are rectified.

The federal government maintains a publicly available national inventory of wrecked and abandoned vessels. To date, over 2,000 of them have been reported.
