More than 8.1 million people are receiving Universal Credit from the Department for Work and Pensions, according to the latest figures from August 2025.

The huge new total includes nearly 237,000 claimants in Birmingham , the highest number of any local authority area in Britain, with just 27 per cent of those in employment.

Large numbers of people will have moved across from old-style benefits that are being phased out. This 'managed migration' is expected to be completed by April 2026, as those switching from legacy benefits adjust to the new rules attached to a Universal Credit claim.
