RUTLAND, VT (ABC22/FOX44) - There is a new public statue in Rutland, honoring a local doctor who was instrumental in identifying the polio epidemic. This marks the 13th statue on the Rutland Sculpture Trail, which started in 2017 as a way to highlight people from the region.
The statue depicts Charles Caverly, who was a doctor in Rutland County starting in 1894. His research into polio led to the development of a vaccine for the entire world.
The marble statue was unveiled earlier in the week, on the lawn of Trinity Episcopal Church.
In the late 1800's doctors had been reporting small clusters of infant paralysis in the U.S. though, the clusters were so small and sporadic that uncovering a diagnosis seemed impossible.
