Australian grandmother Donna Nelson has lost her fight to overturn a conviction for smuggling 2kg of meth into Japan in a suitcase, with her appeal dismissed.

Nelson, 59, was found guilty of the crime in December despite her claims that she was tricked by a love scammer online and is a victim.

On Thursday, three appeal judges in the Tokyo High Court dismissed her appeal and ruled that the Perth community leader and one-time Greens political candidate will need to serve the remainder of her six-year sentence in prison.

It was a bitter blow for Nelson, who was supported in Japan by three of her daughters and some of her grandchildren.
