A young man accused of setting several brush fires in downtown St. John’s during the recent fire ban had his case called in provincial court yesterday.
Twenty-year-old Caleb Boland-Pelkey faces three charges of arson with disregard for human life. He’s already been slapped with a $150,000 fine in the case – $50,000 for each charge.
Firefighters were forced to respond to the fires from Lemarchant Road to New Gower Street within a two-hour span late on the night of August 12. At the time they were trying to contain wildfires near Paddy’s Pond and C.B.S.
The accused was facing a charge of mischief by damaging property prior to the fires.
That charge will be resolved separately on November 6, while the arson case will be called again on October 21.
