HOLYOKE ― A routine inspection Thursday uncovered serious deterioration in the Appleton Street bridge over the 2nd Level Canal, prompting state officials to shut it down immediately and reroute traffic until further notice.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation ordered the immediate closure of the Appleton Street bridge Thursday after a scheduled inspection revealed structural deterioration, according to a press release from Holyoke Mayor Joshua A. Garcia’s office.
