COLUMBIA, S.C. — Many eyes are keeping a close watch on the tropical activity in the Atlantic, one of which could potentially bring impacts to the South Carolina coast in the coming days. There is Tropical Storm Humberto, and a still-developing system in the Caribbean that could become Tropical Storm Imelda Thursday afternoon.

Tropical Storm Humberto is strengthening but staying offshore. As of the latest 5:00 pm advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), it was located about 470 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, moving slowly to the northwest, possibly more west northwest, at just 6 mph. The tropical storm is poorly organized but gaining structure and symmetry, a sign that strengthening is likely.
