Hurricane Helene poured water into the Catawba River, pushing floodwaters beyond the river's banks.

As the river rose, one family lost multiple homes, all located together on family land along Powerhouse Road.

The storm also washed away what was the central hub for the Burke County family

One year later, members are still trying to figure out how to restore what was lost.

When Robert Romulus (Rom) White bought the land by the river in 1948, the first cabin he built was for church and family gatherings.

Through the years, it has been used for birthday parties, church gatherings and civic organization activities. Emergency rescue teams have even used the building as a place to stay during swift water rescue training events.
