CROWN POINT — The second of three defendants was sentenced Friday in the killing of a 13-year-old boy whom they fatally shot after he disrespected a deceased alleged gang member in 2023.

Dahvee Brunson, 19, was sentenced to 142 years in prison. His term is 17 years more than his co-defendant , 20-year-old Kriston Barbee, who was sentenced last August . The two were 17 years old when they opened fire on Orie Dodson Feb. 15, 2023, outside of a Gary church while Dodson was walking to a friend's home. A third man, Elijah Porter, 23, remains charged in the crime.

"He took a life," Lake Criminal Court Judge Samuel Cappas said. "He shouldn't have the opportunity to get out. He should give his (life) in return."
