CROWN POINT — When Nick Tarcia woke up in a hospital bed with an amputated leg four days after he was struck by a car while riding on his motorcycle, he believed he had been gifted a second chance at life.
"When this first happened, my motto was, 'challenge accepted,'" Tarcia said. "And now, many of these things I thought were challenges just aren't. They're impossibilities."
Tarcia, who now has a prosthetic leg, was riding his motorcycle Sept. 24, 2023, near 10th Street and Ash Street in Hobart when Peter Baum, 50, allegedly struck Tarcia with his Chevrolet Camaro and drove off. A witness who heard the crash followed the Camaro and directed police to Baum's residence, where they allegedly found him intoxicated and saw heavy damage to the front of his car.
