REPUBLIC, Mo. (KY3) -For the last two years, the City of Republic has been spray painting storm drains with these words: “Dump no waste. Drains to stream.” This is to help educate the community about the flow of stormwater.

Officials say that regardless of where you live in the city, all storm drains eventually lead to rivers and creeks, untreated. For the most part, the program has worked as designed.

But every fall, officials say they see an uptick in the amount of fall leaves and yard waste getting dumped.

While some may not see the harm in dumping things that decompose naturally, fall leaves and yard debris take months, sometimes years, to fully decompose. This creates issues with buildup, especially when the weather is dry.

And when the rain returns, this can create issues.
