QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A 16-year-old faces multiple charges and could be sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in connection with the deadly shooting of a 13-year-old on his way to school in Queens, the Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced on Saturday.

The teen was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the district attorney.

The charges come after 13-year-old Sanjay Samuel was shot in the head and killed in Cambria Heights, Queens on Monday.

"As alleged, what should have been another day for school turned deadly when the defendant pulled out a gun and fired into the 13-year-old victim’s head," said Katz. "This decision not only took the young victim’s life but now has severely altered the defendant’s future."
