Dozens of community and governmental leaders gathered Thursday morning to celebrate a third station for the Danville Life Saving Crew that went into operation last month.
Rain earlier in the morning cleared in time for the ribbon-cutting event, which is called the George and Sarah Buchanan East Side Station, located at 1024 South Boston Road.
The new facility — in the works since 2020 — will now serve up to 35% of the agency’s 15,000 yearly calls, Danville Life Saving Crew Chief Robbie Woodall said Thursday, standing in front of the renovated complex that was most recently a car dealership.
“Today we are celebrating a great completion of this project, not just for the crew but the citizens we serve on the east side of town in the ever-growing River District,” Woodall said.
