The William & Mary football team nearly completed a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback but ultimately fell short in a 31-24 road loss to No. 20/22 Villanova on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing by two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter, the Tribe (2-3, 1-1 CAA) cut the deficit to seven with a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tyler Hughes with 4:38 remaining. After Villanova (2-2, 1-1) missed a 36-yard field goal with just over a minute left, W&M took over and advanced to midfield before time expired.
The Tribe held a 17-14 halftime lead, but Villanova responded with 17 unanswered points to take control. The momentum shift started immediately after the break when Ja’briel Mace returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Running back David Avit added his third rushing score
