ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - The number of people facing hunger in the Roanoke Valley continues to increase, and a volunteer organization that’s new to the area is taking a unique approach to help address the need.
PORCH Roanoke is a growing volunteer organization that partners neighborhoods with local food pantries, allowing people to donate food without ever leaving their homes. Each neighborhood has a coordinator who goes around once a month to collect food donations from people’s porches and takes them to their designated food pantries.
“It’s a very easy process and a very easy way for people to participate in fighting the 20% hunger rate that we have here in the Roanoke Valley,” said PORCH Roanoke Program Manager Stefanie Fowler.
