LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

Health officials say there's a "concerning" rise in West Nile virus cases in Louisville.

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness says as of Sept. 30, there have been nine people confirmed to have contracted the virus this year, with seven going to the hospital for treatment.

“We are seeing a higher-than-usual number of West Nile virus cases this season, and we urge residents to take mosquito prevention seriously,” Connie Mendel, chief health strategist for LMPHW, said in a news release. “Assume mosquitoes are carrying West Nile virus no matter what ZIP code you live in. Please take precautions to avoid being bitten.”

Officials said all nine people who contracted the virus were between the ages of 40 and 70.
