COLORADO (KREX) - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is piloting autonomous truck-mounted attenuators (ATMAs) to enhance safety for road crews.

These self-driving crash cushion trucks are designed to protect work crews from vehicles running off the road, and CDOT has recently tested them for simple tasks in Southern Colorado.

"These are trucks that follow a work crew that's on a truck," explained Tim Hoover, highlighting their role in protecting workers. Shaz Umer from the United States Department of Transportation noted, "In the last year alone in the state of Colorado, there [were] 23 crashes and 31 fatalities in work zones."
