CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman serving a life sentence for child sex abuse has filed a federal lawsuit challenging North Carolina's prison policy of providing only one cataract surgery per inmate, regardless of medical need.

Pamela Chambers, 64, filed the complaint Monday in federal court with the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina, alleging the state Department of Adult Correction violated her constitutional rights and federal disability laws by denying her a second cataract surgery despite repeated recommendations from prison medical providers.
