DUBLIN, Ga. — Dublin City Schools Superintendent Fred Williams announced his retirement Tuesday, effective Friday, as the district grapples with a projected $12 million budget shortfall and faces potential insolvency.
Williams, who has served the district for 32 years including a decade as superintendent, made the announcement at a specially called school board meeting.
He cited a desire to spend more time with family and begin a new chapter in his life, but did not address the financial crisis facing the system.
The resignation comes as the district has requested $1.5 million from the state to meet this month's payroll.
