LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) is alerting the community to a "concerning increase" of West Nile Virus cases.
So far in 2025, nine people have contracted West Nile Virus from infected mosquitoes. While no deaths have been reported, seven of those cases required hospitalization.
All of the individuals who were affected have been adults between the ages of 40 and 70.
Compared to previous years, it's the highest number of confirmed cases in Jefferson County since 2015. The second highest year was in 2023 with seven confirmed cases.
"We are seeing a higher-than-usual number of West Nile Virus cases this season, and we urge residents to take mosquito prevention seriously," Connie Mendel, chief health strategist for LMPHW, said Tuesday
