SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Frost advisories have been issued for parts of western Massachusetts tonight, with temperatures expected to drop into the 30s.

As temperatures fall, it's important to take precautions to protect your plants from the cold weather.

"If it goes below 40, you should be sure to bring in your house plants," said Judith Bordenuk of Sixteen Acres Garden Center. "And if you want to protect your annuals, you cover them with paper or a light sheet. You never cover them with plastic."

The cooler weather marks a shift from the recent warm, summer-like temperatures, as October begins and the leaves start to change color. Mums, which are popular during this time, tend to be more resilient to cold temperatures than other plants.
