BARRE, Vt. (WCAX) - People who receive 3SquaresVT food benefits may soon see some changes.

3SquaresVT is the Vermont name for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP.

Starting Wednesday, under Congress’ spending plan, there are new work eligibility requirements. And refugees and asylum-seekers are no longer eligible for benefits.

Some antihunger and poverty advocates are concerned about the changes, but they stress there is still assistance available for Vermonters.

“3SquaresVT is still here in Vermont, it is still strong, it is still an incredibly valuable resource that we all deserve to use,” said Anore Horton, the executive director of Hunger Free Vermont .

Last year, about 65,000 Vermonters received some form of food assistance.
