**Skydiver Survives 11,000-Foot Fall After Parachute Failure** A British skydiver survived a harrowing fall from 11,000 feet after both his parachutes failed to deploy during a tandem jump in Las Vegas. Mitch Deakin, 25, was celebrating his birthday on September 17 when the incident occurred. Deakin and his instructor, Jiron Arcos Ponce, 54, experienced a freefall when neither the main parachute nor the backup chute opened. According to police, the pair struck the ground at a speed estimated between 35 and 45 miles per hour. Both were airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Deakin sustained multiple injuries, including a fractured pelvis, broken ribs, a perforated lung, and a laceration to one of his kidneys. His girlfriend, Isabel Clacher, started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover his medical expenses, transportation, and accommodations while in the U.S. The campaign has raised over 18,000 pounds (approximately $35,000) toward its goal of 20,000 pounds (about $37,500). In the fundraiser's description, Clacher noted, "This has been extremely traumatic for him and his family and friends, as he is so far away from home," adding that they are uncertain how long it will take for him to return home. As of September 25, Ponce remained in critical condition. The Las Vegas police and the United States Parachute Association are investigating the incident. One skydiving instructor reported to investigators that he observed the parachute was "not working as well as it could have." The police department has referred further comments to the Federal Aviation Administration. In a recent update on Deakin's condition, his mother shared that he is now able to walk with assistance from a walker. However, doctors discovered additional internal fractures in his back, ribs, and pelvis. She stated that these injuries are stable and will heal over time. Deakin's mother expressed gratitude for the support they have received, saying, "He is really positive, being looked after by an excellent hospital team and is truly grateful for all your kindness, messages, chats, and calls."
