PIKE COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) -- Residents of a western Illinois town were told to stay in their homes while police responded to an "active situation" on Thursday. Later, Illinois State Police revealed that law enforcement were working to take a suspect into custody after two people were killed and a third person was shot.

Illinois State Police is investigating a double homicide in New Canton, a Pike County town about 90 miles west of Springfield.

Around 6 a.m. on Oct. 2, the Pike County Sheriff’s Department responded to Mississippi Street in New Canton after a report was made that someone had been shot.
