WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A Wichita gift shop that has served the community for nearly four decades is preparing to close its doors, with the owner citing tariffs as the final blow to an already challenging business environment.

Jana Northcutt, owner of Chateau Gifts & Flower Preservation, said her business has been struggling with economic pressures and marketing challenges, but tariffs on imported goods have made operations unsustainable.

“We have been fighting the economy and algorithms and getting the word out for a long time, and the icing on the cake has been the tariffs,” Northcutt said.

Rising costs from manufacturers

The problems began earlier this year when Northcutt started receiving unexpected notifications about additional costs on merchandise she had already ordered.
