A huge jigsaw made up of almost 1,500 pieces of art telling stories of Middlesbrough people’s identity goes on show for the first time this weekend. ‘Pieces of Us’ has been launched in response to last year’s riot and has been designed to shine a light on individual and collective sense of belonging.
Art and poetry from 15 primary schools and community centres has been combined to form the finished product. Over 1,400 people have contributed to the artwork which goes on show this weekend as Middlesbrough Art Week closes. The project spans generations with people as young as six and old as 94 having taken part.
The project, funded by Middlesbrough Council using money from the government’s Community Recovery Fund, was the brainchild of community arts company Story & Studio’s Chris Layfield
