JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) -- A federal court has prohibited the City of Jackson from assessing a fee for administrative search warrants, which has led to major changes for the city's rental housing inspection program.
It started in 2021, when Grand River Ridge Apartments owner Nathaniel Williams filed a lawsuit, arguing the city wrongfully issued warrants against his properties without proper authorization.
"I've had tenants tell me that they've threatened them with fines and fees and I've had. Obviously, I've had bills come to me that I had no control over," Williams said.
Williams' lawsuit resulted in a federal injunction in 2024, which was upheld last week. It stops city officials from collecting or assessing administrative fees to property owners who request a warrant for the city to do
