LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- East Lansing Police Chief Jen Brown is responding to criticism surrounding a comment she made last week about minorities during an interview with 6 News, one some local leaders have labeled as insensitive or racist.

East Lansing City Councilwoman Dana Watson says she is frustrated with the following comment Brown made in response to recently released statistics that show the East Lansing Police Department uses "force" against a disproportionately large number of Black and African American people.

"Starting with Welcome Weekend, we've had a disproportionate number of minorities come into the community and commit crimes, and as police officers, we are simply responding to those crimes," said Brown.
