PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - The driver accused of seriously injuring a highway worker in a crash along I-84 told police he was driving 90 miles per hour at the time of the crash, according to court documents.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Portland Police say officers responded to the crash in the westbound lanes of I-84 near NE 148th just before 9p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2.

The driver, identified as 20-year-old Gabriel Dorton, reportedly told police he was heading home from working at a FedEx location in Troutdale while driving 90 miles per hour in the median to pass another car, and acknowledged that he knew the speed limit was 60.

Dorton said he then hit the brakes and steered into the median barriers when he saw the crash victim, highway worker Elidio Diaz.
