CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – CATS leaders are exploring ways to crack down on fare evasion. It’s part of a broader set of security upgrades coming to the system.

Transit officials in Denver, Colorado, launched a similar initiative on their light rail system last year that has led to a noticeable shift.

Security on Charlotte’s light rail system has been under scrutiny ever since Iryna Zarutska was stabbed and killed in August.

On Friday, CATS and city leaders unveiled a new safety plan to implement UTV and bike units to quickly patrol transit. They’re also pushing a fare enforcement focus.

“These are not the things that are promised, these are the things we are doing, these steps are in motion,” Mayor Vi Lyles said during Friday’s press conference.
