SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Closures could be coming to yet another Valley school district. This time, two schools are on the chopping block in the Scottdale Unified School District: Pima Elementary and Echo Canyon.

The closure consideration was announced in a blog published last week by Superintendent Dr. Scott Menzel. He cited declining enrollment and rising operating costs as the reasons for the possible closures.

"When schools operate with very low enrollment, they do not generate enough funding to cover the cost of staffing and maintaining the facility. Continuing to operate schools under these conditions is financially unsustainable and puts pressure on the entire district budget," Menzel wrote.
