WASHINGTON — Less than one month before election day in Virgnia, gubernatorial candidates Winsome Earle-Sears and Abigail Spanberger are scheduled appear together for the first time on the debate stage at Norfolk State University on Thursday.

It's an historic campaign that is all but certain to end with the commonwealth electing its first female governor.

Earle-Sears, 61, has served as lieutenant governor of Virginia since 2022. Spanberger, 46, was most recently a U.S. representative from Virginia's 7th district from 2019 to 2025. Democrat Eugene Vindman currently represents that district.

Early voting has already begun in Virginia, with the general election held Tuesday Nov. 4 -- the commonwealth and New Jersey are the only U.S. states with races for governor in 2025.
