SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Mike Hayes is a self-confessed data geek, so it’s probably not so surprising that, in the middle of a heat wave in July, he started thinking about how much energy his air conditioners were using.

If it had been a few days earlier, he would have had to keep on wondering, but Hayes had just had a new smart electric meter installed at the home he shares with his wife Ruth on a leafy cul-de-sac in Wakefield.
