AVON, Maine —
Nearly a dozen dogs and several cats are dead after flames engulfed a home in Avon, Mane, Tuesday night.
Phillips Fire Chief Sean Allen said it took crews nearly 45 minutes to find the fire on Mile Square Road, because it was at the end of a long driveway and hidden by trees. At one point, the fire department even flew a drone to help find the fire as deputies checked every driveway on the road.
Someone in Phillips initially reported the fire at about 9:40 p.m., saying they could see flames through the ridgeline.
By the time firefighters were able to reach the fire, the home was engulfed in flames.
Allen said no one was home at the time and no people were hurt, but at least 11 dogs did die. The Maine State Fire Marshal's Office said four cats also died in the fire.
