MANDAN, ND (KXNET) — After six years on the job, Mandan Police K9 Kupper is officially off duty trading his badge for a tennis ball and a well-earned retirement with his handler, Sgt. Josh Scherr.

The 8-year-old German Shepherd was honored Friday afternoon at Dykshoorn Park, where the community gathered to celebrate his years of service. Kupper began working with the Mandan Police Department in 2019 when he was just two years old. He was the first police K9 in the department’s history, made possible by a generous donation from local businessman Bob Kupper — the dog’s namesake.

Chief Jason Ziegler said Kupper’s work changed the way officers keep Mandan safe.
