Larga Kitikmeot will be building a new, culturally appropriate medical travel lodge in Yellowknife for residents of Nunavut’s Kitikmeot region who need accommodations while receiving healthcare outside of their home territory.
The four-storey, 75-room facility will be located at 346 Borden Drive, next to Mary Brown’s Chicken, and will replace the current 58-bed, 26-room building located on the corner of Franklin Avenue and Matonabee Street that has been in operation since 2009.
The City of Yellowknife approved the development permit on Oct. 2 needed to begin the project.
Casey Adlem, president of Larga Kitikmeot in Yellowknife, said the ground blasting will begin next week so they can move forward with starting the foundation before winter sets in.
