LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A longtime New Albany business owner and community member marked a very significant milestone.

The family and friends of Edith Kane gathered to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Those celebrating Edith said that she and her husband Jesse were some of the first black business owners in New Albany.

The couple opened Jesse’s Grill and fed hungry customers for three decades as a staple in the New Albany community.

After Edith’s husband passed, her family says she continued to manage the restaurant for another 20 years.

But under all that hard work was an overwhelming compassion for others.

“I remember my mother, she always taught us kindness, and to be kind to people,” said Edith’s daughter, Virginia Kane. “When she would give free meals to people, I would say, ‘Mom,
