MANITOWOC, Wis. (WBAY) - The U.S.S. Cobia is now on its way back to Manitowoc.
It left Sturgeon Bay after undergoing a six-week restoration project.
According to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, the Cobia’s home in Manitowoc, the journey will take roughly 8 hours. However, it notes, that the winds are out of the northeast, which could help speed the trip along.
The restoration was the first time the sub had traversed open water in 30 years. Although the submarine was not one of the 28 built in Manitowoc during World War II, it has served as a landmark in the city since 1970, with thousands taking tours of the cobia every year.
The public is welcome to watch the return of the ship in Manitowoc on Wednesday afternoon; it’s due at around 3 p.m.
