FARGO — The North Dakota Association of the Blind invited people to take part in a walk to raise awareness for the white cane.
A few dozen people joined the annual Walk for Vision near North Dakota State University’s campus on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
The event coincides with White Cane Safety Day, established by Congress in 1964. Organizers said they hope to make people aware of why those with vision loss use their canes and how important they are for living their lives.
"I was once in a grocery checkout line, and the cashier asked if this was my ski pole, so awareness is important," said Allan Peterson, development director for the North Dakota Association of the Blind.
Proceeds from the walk go to programs that support people in North Dakota who have experienced vision loss.
