GAFFNEY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - An Upstate animal shelter said it may face a difficult decision as it reaches critical capacity.
The Cherokee County Animal Shelter on Progressive Drive is overcrowded, a situation officials say is compounded by the closure of the Humane Society of Cherokee County last year.
For the first time, county officials said the shelter may have to euthanize animals simply to make space.
Shelter Director Kelly Ellis said her team is doing everything possible to avoid this outcome, but they need help from the community.
“We’ve fought hard to avoid euthanizing for space, but the truth is we can’t do it alone,” Ellis said. “Every adoption, every rescue, every donation — it all matters. These are good animals who deserve homes, not cages.”
