CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. —

The animal shelter in Cherokee County, South Carolina, says it's overcrowded and under-resourced and for the first time may soon have to euthanize animals.

The shelter is putting out an urgent plea to the community to help by adopting pets and donating food.

They said the challenge is compounded by the 2024 closure of the Humane Society of Cherokee County, which had long served as the county’s primary nonprofit partner for rescue and adoption.

Since then, the county’s animal shelter said it has worked tirelessly to fill that gap by managing intake, care, and adoption outreach, all with a small staff and limited budget.
