Jesus Montero, who was a highly-touted prospect for the New York Yankees who played one season for the franchise before four more with the Seattle Mariners, died at the age of 35.
"The Yankees are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jesús Montero," wrote the franchise in a statement. "We send our sincerest condolences to his family & loved ones."
How did the former catcher die? As USA TODAY Sports wrote, he "was involved in an automobile accident in his native Venezuela, according to local reports."
There's more from the New York Post: "On Oct. 4, Montero’s motorcycle hit a pickup truck in Valencia, in his native Venezuela, and he suffered severe injuries for which he was put into an induced coma at Valencia City Hospital."
