SPRINGVILLE, Ala. —

A new administration in Springville means Police Chief Wayne Walton will be stepping down from his position, prompting the city council to honor his service.

Current Mayor Dave Thomas said the incoming mayor will take his seat in the next couple of weeks and has decided to appoint a new police chief once that happens.

As a result, Walton will be leaving his position.

Thomas expressed gratitude for Walton's contributions over the years.

"When I first became mayor, I asked our police chief to raise the bar," Thomas said. "We wanted to turn the department around because it was in shambles, and we wanted Springville to be where others come to train and learn, and Chief Walton took that to heart."

The replacement for Walton has not been announced.
