(WKYT) - In the lead-up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back every day at ‘This Day In History.’

On this date in 1959, the Guggenheim Museum opened to the public.

Located on New York City’s Fifth Avenue, thousands of people waited in line to see one of the world’s top collections of modern art.

The museum is named for the collection of mining tycoon Soloman R. Guggenhiem, but the unique upside down cupcake-looking building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Some people complained the bold design took away from the art inside.

But fans outweighed them and it went on to become one of New York’s most popular attractions.
