A man who sent his victim a Facebook message saying “So I raped you” was sentenced on Monday, Oct. 20, nearly 12 years after the assault at Gettysburg College.
Ian Thomas Cleary, 32, was sentenced to two to four years in state prison, with credit for 546 days already served, according to the Adams County Court of Common Pleas docket. He will also serve probation following his release and must register as a Tier III lifetime sex offender.
Cleary pleaded guilty in July 2025 to felony sexual assault for attacking Shannon Keeler, then an 18-year-old freshman at Gettysburg College in December 2013. Keeler, a lacrosse player from Moorestown, New Jersey, told police that Cleary followed her from a fraternity party through the snow, then forced his way into her dorm room and raped her.
The case drew national attention years later when Keeler confronted Cleary online. In 2020, she received a string of messages from him on Facebook, including the now infamous admission: “So I raped you.” She turned the messages over to law enforcement, leading Adams County prosecutors to file charges in 2021.
Cleary, who grew up between his father’s home in Saratoga, California, and his mother’s home in Baltimore, Maryland, had left Gettysburg after the attack. He later earned a degree from Santa Clara University, completed graduate work, and worked for Tesla before moving overseas. He was arrested in Metz, France, in April 2024 after a police check and extradited to Pennsylvania in early 2025.
Senior Judge Kevin Hess presided over the sentencing in Gettysburg on Oct. 20. Court documents show that Cleary is not eligible for RRRI (Recidivism Risk Reduction Incentive) and was remanded to the custody of the Adams County Sheriff to be transported to SCI Camp Hill for classification.
Cleary remains held at the Adams County Adult Correctional Complex until his prison transfer.
